Blackjack — rules

How Blackjack plays in OmertaEra, the free Prohibition-era mafia MMO. The same rules are shown where the game is played, and every outcome is provably fair.

One table for the whole room: one dealer and a 6-deck shoe, shuffled fresh for every hand. Get closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. Everybody at the table plays against the same dealer and sees every hand; other players fill the seats around you, and the table deals even if you are the only one betting.

  • A hand: bets are open for 15 seconds. Everyone who bet is dealt in, in seat order (a player betting without a seat comes after the seats): a card each, the dealer’s face-up card, a second card each, and the dealer’s hole card face down. Anyone who did not bet sits the hand out.
  • Then each seat plays all its hands in turn. You have 20 seconds for each decision; when the clock runs out your hands stand. When every seat has played, the dealer turns the hole card, draws to 17 and every hand is paid. The result stays up for 6 seconds, then bets open for the next hand.
  • Cards 2–10 count their number, J/Q/K count 10, an ace counts 11 or 1.
  • A two-card 21 is blackjack and pays 3 to 2 (2.5× back). A win pays even money (2× back), a tie (push) returns your bet, a bust loses.
  • Insurance: when the dealer shows an ace everybody at the table has 8 seconds to insure for half their bet (no answer is no insurance); it pays 2 to 1 if the dealer has blackjack. Then the dealer peeks. With a ten-value card showing the dealer peeks straight away. A dealer blackjack ends the hand and takes only your original bet (and pushes against your blackjack).
  • Hit for a card (reaching 21 stands for you), stand, or double on any first two cards: the bet doubles and you get exactly one more card.
  • Split two cards of the same value once, into two hands with a bet each. You may double after splitting. Split aces get one card each and stand. 21 on a split hand is 21, not blackjack.
  • No surrender. The dealer draws to 17 and stands on every 17, soft ones included.
  • Doubling, splitting and insurance need the extra cash in your pocket, and the table limit covers everything the round puts at risk — when a move would break it, hit or stand.
  • One bet a hand. A hand from the old one-player tables still open is played out first (it stands for you after 5 minutes).
  • Provably fair: the shoe’s seed hash is shown when bets open and the seed when the hand is paid. The fairness page replays the whole hand — every seat’s moves in order — and checks your cards, the dealer’s and your pay.
  • With perfect basic strategy the table returns about 99.5%.
