Multiplayer tables — rules

How Multiplayer tables plays in OmertaEra, the free Prohibition-era mafia MMO. The same rules are shown where the game is played, and every outcome is provably fair.

Texas Hold’em, Seven-Card Stud and Russian Roulette are gathered at local tables, shown on each game’s page. A table belongs to one city in one state, and only tables in the city your gangster is standing in are listed and can be joined; take the train to play somewhere else.

Opening and joining

  • Anyone can open a table where they stand, setting the buy-in and choosing public or invitation only. Whoever opens it is the host.
  • You hold one seat at one table at a time, across every game; leave it before sitting anywhere else.
  • Sit down at any public table in your city that has a free seat. You take the lowest free seat number.
  • Quick Join sits you at the public table in your city closest to dealing (fewest players still needed, then the fullest, then the oldest). If the nearest open table is in another city it does not seat you. If no table is open anywhere it opens one for you at the game’s smallest buy-in; open one yourself to choose a bigger stake. A table can only be opened at a buy-in it can be dealt at.

Invitations

  • Anyone seated at an open table can invite a living gangster by name. They are told, and the table shows on their own list.
  • An invitation-only table can only be joined by someone invited, and they still have to be in that city.

Leaving, dropping out and closing

  • Leave at any time. If the host leaves, whoever has been seated longest becomes the host. A table everyone leaves closes.
  • While you are seated your page checks in every 30 seconds. A seat that stops checking in is held for 2 minutes, so a reload or a lost connection does not cost it; after that the seat is cleared.
  • Your seat is also cleared if you leave the city or die.
  • An open table with one player or none that is more than 20 minutes old closes.

Other players only ever see the city and state of a table, never anything more precise.
